Trion Rec. Dept. 7&8 Boys finish 2nd in State.

The Trion Rec. Dept. 7&8 Boys traveled to Screven County last week and came away with a second place finish. The Boys kicked off the tournament with a 15-3 pounding of Bowdon in the first round. The next night they defeated Irwin county 6-0. The boys ran into their first defeat on Friday with a 16-3 loss to Jeff Davis.  They would rebound the next morning beating a tough Putnam county team 9-5 to advance to the State championship final. Needing 2 victories over a Jeff Davis team that has played over 100 games this year, the boys jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Jeff Davis proved to be to tough in the end though eventually prevailing 15-8 to claim the Class C Championship. We are very proud of this group of young men and offer them our congratulations!!  The Rec. Dept. would also like to thank Coach Tracy Trammell and his assistants for the great job they did this year with these boys.

TRION FLEA BOYS (7&8) WIN SECOND CONSECUTIVE FIFTH DISTRICT CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP

The Trion Rec. 7&8 Flea boys rolled thorough the 5th District Class C baseball tournament this past week, winning the

district crown for the second consecutive year. Trion, who was undefeated in the tourney, will advance to the Class C State Tournament July 8-10 in Sylvania (Screven Co.) Ga. Trion will play the District 4 winner Thursday, July 8 at 8:30 p.m.

With the Trion Rec. hosting the tournament and the added onus of being the defending champion, nerves were on display as the Dogs open the tourney against Tallapoosa. Uncharacteristic errors enabled the visitors to post 3 runs in the top of the first inning. But things soon settled down and normalcy set in as the vaunted Trion bats began to explode. The Dogs plated 4 in the first and 6 in the second to quickly jet out to a 10-6 lead. With 4 more in the third

and another 5 in the 4th the issue was soon settled. The game was stopped in the 4th on the mercy rule and Trion had a

19-7 victory.

Every Dog swung the bat well and the 27 total hits proved it. Colt Trammell and Hagen Willingham each scored four times and Rory Hogg and Logan Bicknell had key rbi’s. Defense played a big role after the shaky start, holding Tallapoosa to just one run in the last two innings.

In Monday’s 7 p.m. game, Haralson County matched up with Pickens. After staying close for two innings, Pickens’ defense faltered and Haralson took advantage with a nine run outburst in the third inning. This game was also shortened to just four innings with Haralson rolling to an 18-9 win.

Tuesday pitted the two winners, Trion and Haralson together in the 6 p.m. game. Tracey Trammell’s Bulldogs were sitting on ready for this game. No nerves this time. Haralson failed to score in the first inning attributed to a beautiful catch in right center field by Carter Glenn. Glenn made a running grab of a fly ball with two runners in scoring position and two out. Trion then proceeded to put 11 runs on the board in the bottom of the frame to remove all mystery from the contest, on their way to a 14-2 win.

Will Wyatt, Walker Weaver and Lincoln Maddux had big hits for the Dogs who now stood alone as the only undefeated team.

Tallapoosa eliminated Pickens 14-6 in Tuesdays’ last game setting up the finals. It would be neighbors Haralson and Tallapoosa squaring off in Wednesday’s first games with the winner taking on Trion.

Haralson came in the game as a bit of an underdog to most observers. The Rebels quickly proved the skeptics wrong as they rolled over their fellow county-men 15-2. Tallapoosa couldn’t get anything going and when they had baserunners, key hits just would not come.

In the final game of the tourney, Haralson got another shot at the home standing Bulldogs. For two innings, the Rebels went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs and the game was knotted at 1-1. Trion plated 5 runs in the top of the third to wrestle away a 6-1 lead and then turned to the defense in the bottom of the inning that shut out Haralson. Like a ticking time bomb, the Trion offense exploded in the top of the 4th with 10 runs to turn the game into a route.

Brier Ingle’s homerun and big hits by Luke Overbay and Jake Hayes catapulted the Dogs to the big 16-1 title game victory.

Trion Midget Girls place 3rd in State

The Trion Rec. Dept. Midget Girls traveled to Fannin Co. to participate in the 11&12 GRPA State tournament March 5th-6th. On Friday night the Girls squared off against Glennville. The game was a rout from the opening tip as the Lady Dogs raced to a 20-0 lead on their way to a 27-2 halftime lead. The girls were never seriously challenged as they went on to a 47-10 victory. Lauren Causey paced the Dogs with 11 points. Haley Fowler and Jaden Morrison chipped in 8 apiece as the Dogs advanced to the 2nd round to play a tough Fitzgerald team. Fitzgerald jumped out to a big lead going up 25-5 at one time in the first half. The Dogs fought back with a 14-2 spurt before the half cutting the lead to 27-19 at halftime thanks in part to the "hustling all over the floor"  play of Rachel Woods. Woods provided a much needed spark off the bench and was a pivotal reason why the Dogs cut into the lead.  The girls would get within 6  points 2 times in the second half but could never get any closer falling 47-38 to end their season. Haley Fowler was solid with 14 points for the dissapointed Dogs. Never the less, the Lady dogs had a tremendous season. Their hard work should not go unrecognized. These ladies all have a bright athletic future and we can look forward to seeing them again as they continue their sport careers in Middle School and High School.

In other Rec State action, the 7&8 Boys fell to Heard County 27-19 in the first round of the Flea State Tournament. The 11-12 Boys fell to Screven County and the 13-14 Boys lost to Irwin County. Congratulations to all these teams and their coaches on a fine job this basketball season!

Trion 13-14 Boys advance to State with victory over Bremen

The Trion 13-14 Junior Boys advanced to the State Tournament with a 51-28 thrashing of Bremen. The 2nd half was dominated by Trion as they destroyed Bremen on the boards and put the pedal to the metal after a slow start. With Bremen leading 11-8 after one quarter and Trion coming back to take only a 2 point lead into halftime, the Bulldogs came out on fire in the 2nd half outscoring Bremen 13-4 in the 3rd quarter and 19-7 in the 4th. Landon Jones led the Dogs with 23 points. Rhett Tucker and Drew Tucker had  9 each and Callan Hamby had 8. The Dogs will now travel to Early County on March 6th to play in the GRPA State Tournament. Trion received a bye in the tournament and will face the winner of the 1st round game between the District 3 champs and the District 4 champs. The game will begin at 11am and will be held at the Early county H.S. Gymnasium. Brackets for this tournament can be downloaded above.

7&8 Boys, 11&12 Girls are District Champs!

The Trion Rec. Dept. 7&8 boys and 11&12 Girls came home with District Championships after hard fought victories this weeekend. The 7&8 Boys began their tournament Friday night as they waxed Haralson County 37-5. Jake Hayes led the way with 12 points. Blaine Woody chipped in 10 and Brier Ingle had 9 to lead the Dogs. Trion led at halftime by a score of 21-0 and the game was never in doubt. Trion would now face a tough Bremen team who had beaten Pickens County 27-14 early Saturday morning. The "rested" Dogs proved to be to much for the Blue Devils as they pulled away late to win easily 34-20. The contest was close throughout as Trion trailed 9-7 after one and led 13-10 at halftime. The Dogs extended their lead to 23-18 after 3 quarters before outscoring Bremen 11-2 in the final stanza. It was Trion's first District title in 7&8 play. Trion had balanced scoring in the Championship. Hagen Willingham had 9 points. Blaine Woody had 8 and Brier Ingle had 7 respectfully. The 7&8 boys will now travel to Heard Conuty on March 5th to face the host team at 5:30pm. The game will be at the Heard County Recreation Complex in Franklin, GA.

The 11&12 Girls came into their tournament at Haralson County with a TON of talent but only 4 practices to get it together. The girls "tuned up" on Tallapoosa Friday night  with a score of 47-12. The game was over early and the clock ran the entire 4th qtr as the "mercy rule" helped out the clearly overmatched Tallapoosa team. Trion got big games from Peyton Henderson, Autie Abernathy, and Rayven Lawrence and strong bench play from Annabelle Chandler and Rachel Woods. Saturday would prove to be much tougher though as the competition would take a step up. Trion would match up with Fannin County at 11:30am on Saturday. The Lady Dogs would jump out to a fast start and lead 13-6 after one quarter. The 2nd quarter was even and Trion led 21-14 at Halftime. The Dogs would come out on fire in the 3rd qtr. outscoring Fannin 13-7 to extend the lead to 34-21 on their way to a 46-30 victory. Haley Fowler led Trion with 12 points and Courtney Hobbs had 10 points. Rayven Lawrence had 9 and to many rebounds to count. Trion would now face Pickens County in the marquee matchup of the tournament. The Dogs showed they were up to the task as they raced out to a 10-0 lead forcing Pickens to use a timeout. Trion led 13-9 after one quarter. The Lady Dogs would really heat up in the 2nd quarter. Haley Fowler caught fire and started knocking down jumpers. She would score 8 points in the period. Rayven Lawrence contributed 4 points as well. The back breaker however came with 20 seconds remaining in the half. Sam Stricklin was holding the ball for the final shot when the Pickens coach sent a player after her. Stricklin calmly sidestepped the defender and knocked down a 3 to give Trion a 28-13 halftime lead, knocking the wind right out of Pickens County's sails. The Dogs would go onto a a resounding 40-29 victory. Haley Fowler once again led Trion with 14 points  Rayven Lawrence chipped in 7 and Lauren Causey and Jaden Morrison both had 6 points and played "lights out" defense the whole tournament. The Lady Dogs now travel to Fannin County to take on Glennville at 8pm at the old Fannin County H. S.

In other District 5 action, the 11&12 boys advanced to state with a 2nd place finish in Haralson county losing a nailbiter in the Championship game to Fannin County 59-53. By losing to the State host team the boys still earned a state berth. The 9&10 boys lost a heartbreaker in the Championship game to Fannin County 39-32. The 9&10 girls came up short in their quest for State losing 17-5 to Bremen and the 7&8 Girls dropped a tough one to Pickens 13-9. All of these teams should be congratulated on fine seasons and the hard work they put in this year.

MIDGETS CAPTURE CATOOSA COUNTY NORTH GA. FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: PEE-WEES FALL IN CLOSE CONTEST

The 10-11 Trion Recreation Midgets were crown Catoosa County-North Georgia football league champions last Thursday night after their 14-0 win over the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Warriors. This team finally won their elusive championship after most of the squad  played for the 7&8 and 8&9 crown only to come up as runner-up each year. The 6&7 Pee-Wees also played for the championship, losing out 24-16 in a close loss to Chattanooga Valley.  Each championship contest was played at Chickamauga’s Gordon Lee High School field. This marked the first time two Trion Recreation Dept.  teams earned the right to play for the Catoosa County-North Georgia Football League Championship in the same year.

Trion’s Midgets took the field Thursday night fresh off a thrilling 3 overtime 24-22 victory over Summerville last Saturday that earned them the ticket to the finals. Thursday’s temperatures began to drop with the sun and by the 7:30 start time, cold hands and feet were the norm on and off the field. This was the first “cold” game for this team and the Dogs seemed to sputter in the initial stages of the contest.

Late in the first quarter, Trion began to awaken and the vaunted offense of Coaches George Maddux and Adam Hankins began to get their footing. LFO experienced a bad snap on 4th and 13 and the Dogs took over at the Warrior 45. A solid Jake Wells run of 13 yards followed by a Jarret Pierce 20 yard scamper put the Dogs at the Warrior door on the 8. Two plays later, quarterback Dawson Day handed the ball to Pierce and behind the blocking of the Dogs big line, Pierce waltzed into the endzone for 6 points. Wells covered the three yards for the two point conversion and with 7:51 showing in the first half, Trion led 8-0.

LFO gave the Dogs another golden opportunity to score when they went for a first down deep in their territory at the 19. The Bulldog defense of Brandon Floyd and Randall Pierce totally shut down the Warriors and Trion took over. The Dogs failed to convert when the Dog passer was hit as he threw and the Warriors intercepted and returned the ball back out to the 40 yard line.

Still LFO couldn’t move the ball and went to the airways where Pierce made a diving interception at the Warrior 45. With the clock winding down in the half, the Trion offense ripped off several first downs and moved to the Warrior 4 with just 15 seconds left in the half. Jake Wells got the call and jetted into paydirt with just 8 seconds left to cap the 7 play 45 yard drive. The PAT was no good but Trion was up 14-0.

Trion’s defense, which has been stalwart this year for the one loss team, really stepped it up in the second half. LFO was kept bottled up in their own end, able to only cross the 50 yard line once in the second half. Trion meanwhile, drove down to the ten yard line, highlighted by a 45 yard run by Pierce and later in the half, to the 7 but each time the fumble bug bit and the Dogs turned it over. Never the less, the 14 points posted in the first half was more than enough for the Dogs. Fittingly, the final seconds ticked off as LFO’s quarterback was sacked by the tremendous Bulldog defense.

The 6:30 game featured the 6&7 Pee Wee Championship. The Bulldogs boasted a perfect record on the season but the opponent, Chattanooga Valley, was also undefeated in 2009. Something had to give as the leagues’ best met in the finals.

Trion had sailed along undefeated during the regular season with their closest game coming in last Saturday’s 14-12 victory over the Ringgold Blue. The Danny Overbay-Tracy Trammell led squad had a regular season contest with Chattanooga Valley rained out so the Dogs and Eagles were seeing each other for the first time.

Chattanooga Valley came prepared with the Ridgeland band and the Panther cheerleaders but the boisterous Trion crowd could be well heard over the din.

The teams battled back and forth during a scoreless first quarter, like two heavy weight boxers sizing each other up. Trion would face a 4th and 7 at their own 49 late in the 2nd quarter. A fierce defensive stand by the Eagles dropped the Bulldogs at the line of scrimmage and CV took over the ball. On their first snap quarterback Drew Mead scampered 51 yards to put the Eagles on the board first. The Dogs stopped the 2 point conversion and with 4:30 left in the half Chattanooga Valley led 6-0.

Trion’s initial possession of the second half would prove fruitful for the Dogs. Using up all but 1:32 of the quarter, Trion marched 60 yards in 10 plays for the touchdown. Colt Trammell did the honors from the one. Trammell also got the two point conversion and Trion took the lead 8-6.

The Eagles came right back on the ensuing drive. Using a key 30 yard gain on 3rd and long Chattanooga Valley resumed the lead when Jordan Blackwell scored from the 17 yard line. Again the conversion was no good and CV had a 12-8 lead with 6:16 to go in the game.

The Dogs’ offense went back to work on the next series. Trion began on their own 35 yard line and methodically moved down the field.  Five plays into the drive and with only 3:26 left Trion fumbled on the Eagle 35. On CV’s next play, Blackwell set sail down the right side line for a 65 yard touchdown run. The run for two was no good and the Eagle led 18-8.

Trying to get back in the game the Dogs were forced to go to the air. On the first pass Drew Mead intercepted the Trion pass and returned it for a touchdown with just 2:25 showing. CV missed the conversion but led 24-8.

Trion got the ball back and on the first play Trammell jetted and juked around right end for a 65 yard touchdown run. He also got the two point conversion to draw the to within 24-16.

The Dogs would get the ball back one more time but with only 8 seconds left. Not enough time to mount a threat.
