MITE BULLDOGS COMPLETE PERFECT SEASON

WITH NORTH GA.

SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP OVER CHICKAMAUGA

The Trion Rec. Mite Bulldogs (8&9) completed a perfect 2011 football season by winning the North Georgia Youth Football League Super Bowl 20-18 over Chickamauga last Saturday afternoon at Ridgeland High School. The Dogs, who finished the year 10-0, ran out to a 20-0 halftime lead and then held on as Chickamauga gave them a finish. This was Trion’s second championship in the last two years (10&11 in 2009) but the first by an 8&9 team.

Trion’s Colt Trammell was named the games’ Most Valuable Player as he rushed for 178 yards in the contest.

The Trojans won the toss and elected to receive but on their third play from scrimmage, the ball carrier was met in the backfield by Kobe Nadu and fumbled. Jaxsun Hood jumped on the pigskin and Trion had the ball at the Bulldog 48.

Going right to work, Trion pounded the Trojans off right tackle behind the blocks of Bo Jones, Collin Harris, Hood and Lincoln Maddux. Tailback Bryce Wallin rambled for 12 yards followed by a 4 yarder. With Chickamauga looking for the hard charging Wallin, Trammell kept the ball and skirted around the end, eluding several Trojan tacklers for a 40 yard touchdown run.

Trion’s defense was controlling the game; in fact the Trojans didn’t manage a first down until the 5 minute mark in the second quarter. It was the only first down the team garnered in the first half. Leading this defensive charge were Nadu, Estin Powell, Kodiak Crabbe, Ty Veatch, Bowdon Brock, and Jordon Bradley.

With the defense playing well, Trion got the ball back on a punt at their own 31. On the first play, Trammell turned inside off the block of Steven Johnson and broke clear into the Trojan secondary. Nobody was going to catch him as he jetted 69 yards for the touchdown. The Dogs missed the extra but led 12-0 with 1:18 left in the first quarter.

Chickamauga punted when faced with 4th and 15 and Trion had another chance to score from their own 39 yard line. Several running plays advanced the ball to the mid-stripe line where Trion had a first down. Again, Trammell did more magic as he got a blocks from Shane Johnson and Kolby Croft, juked and shook, leaving Trojans all over the field, and then motored down the field for another Bulldog touchdown. This time the point after was good as Will Wyatt caught the short toss. With 5:41 left in the half Trion was leading 20-0.

That two point conversion didn’t seem so important at the time as the Trojans had garnered only one first down the entire half and had minus yards rushing offensively. The Chickamauga defense was also on their heels as Trion had scored 3 touchdowns on 4 possessions (the other ended in a Bulldog fumble) and showed no signs of stopping the Dogs.

Half time was a long twenty minutes as the North Georgia League announce South and North All-Star Squads who will play against each other Dec. 3rd at Gordon Lee High School. Named from Trion were Steven Johnson, Kobe Nadu, Colt Trammell, Kodiak Crabbe, Bryce Wallin, Will Wyatt, Lincoln Maddux, Jaxsun Hood, Dakota Jones, and Jordon Bradley. Whether the Dogs lost their focus with the long lay-off or what, the tide and momentum began to change in the second half.

The Dogs would receive the kickoff but disaster would strike. Chickamauga recovered the bounding ball on the Trion 44 yard line. Suddenly, the Trojans began to find their stride offensively. They pounded the ball in the middle of the Bulldog defense and methodically marched down the field. In spite of the defensive efforts of the Dogs, the Trojans had first and goal at the Bulldog 8 yard line. Finally with 4:57 left in the third quarter Trojan Gabe Peterson found his way into the endzone from the 3 yard line. Trion stopped the two point conversion and now led 20-6.

Trion got the ball back on the kickoff with a good run by Trammell who benefitted from blocks by Eli McQuese, Ethan Young, and Dawson Keith. Beginning at the Dog 37, Wallin reeled off a 34 yard run deep into Trojan territory. Two errant snaps in the shot-gun formation put Trion in 4th and long. Trammell’s 8 yard carry was not enough and Chickamauga took over on downs at their own 27.

The two teams swapped punts and the fourth quarter began with Chickamauga with the ball at the Trojan 43. Chickamauga went back to the pound game and began to see results. The visitors rolled off first downs and time off the clock. Kaleb Craig, Elijah Stewart, Kawyer Dennis, Seth Wilson, Corey Cameron and Braden Miller were plugged into the defense to halt the march but the Trojans had built up too much momentum. Finally, with only 2:18 left in the game, Peterson dived into the end zone for the touchdown. Again, the Dogs rose up and stopped the two point conversion and continued to lead 20-12.

Now the Dogs were playing in their first tight game of the season. Most opponents had been dispatched early and the games not really close. With their vaunted offense and stingy defense the Dogs had had their way in rolling to the 9-0 record. Suddenly, the nerves began to tighten and the Trion fans saw that “ole Mo”mentum was wearing navy blue. But things were ok. With just two minutes left all was left to do was field the kickoff, right?

Well Trion had trouble with the kickoff again and tensions rose dramatically on the Trion side when a Trojan came up with the pigskin on the Trion 28 yard line. A game that threatened to be a laugher at the half now had Trion fans worried and the Trojan side giddy with hope.

The Dogs were hit with a 5 yard off-side penalty to begin the drive. The Trojans got a good run to the Bulldog 14. Soon they were knocking on the door at the Trion 8 yard line with 47 seconds to go and the Trojans took a timeout. Going back to what worked in the second half, Chickamauga pounded the ball in the middle and had a first down at the 1 yard line with 18 seconds to go. The Trojan quarterback plunged into the end zone with 12 seconds to go to draw Chickamauga within 2 at 20-18. The Trojans called their last timeout to consider their best play for a two point conversion. Most Trion fans guessed that they would pound the middle as they had done. Instead, the Trojans opted for a swing pass to the back and the pass was incomplete sending a sigh of relief throughout the Trion sidelines.

Still, there was more drama to be experienced by the Dogs. The kickoff bounded away from a Bulldog and there was another Trojan on the ball at the Bulldog 38 yard line. Improbably, three on-side kickoffs were recovered by Chickamauga in the last 2:18 of the game. This time the Trojans caught a pass at the 24 but the final pass was knocked down as the horn sounded to end the game.

Trion parents and fans flooded the field as the trophy presentation was made. The Dogs got their Super Bowl caps, individual trophies and a banner declaring them the 2011 8&9 Super Bowl Champions.

This has been a great year attributed to the hard work of coaches Tracy Trammell, Chris Harris, Casey Veatch, Jimbo Crabtree, Jeremy Reece and Scott Crabbe. These gentlemen spend countless personal hours with Trion’s youngsters honing them into a team and making them better individuals. Kudos also go out to the 8&9 Mite Cheerleaders who supported their team in a tremendous way this year. The Trion Rec. would also like to thank Trion City Schools for the use of the bus to transport the kids to the Super Bowl. The Trion Pep-Band was also there to cheer on the kids and entertain the fans. It was great to hear the school song played as the kids gathered around after the trophy presentation. As always, “It’s great to be a Trion Bulldog”.

Trion Recreation Dept. 7-8 Girls place 3rd in state

The Trion Rec. Dept. 7-8 Girls had a tremendous season that culminated with a 3rd place finish in the GRPA State tournament in Eastman-Dodge Co. The Girls started off the tournament on Thursday with a resounding victory over Reidsville 10-2. They then advanced to the 2nd round on Friday to play a tough Wilcox County team. In a thrilling close fought game, the girls pulled out a 10-9 victory after losing the lead late only to reclaim it in the bottom of the 5th. Next up for the Dawgs? A winners' bracket final date with the Alma-Bacon Knockouts. The game was close for awhile but the Lady Dawgs eventually fell 15-3 to set up a rematch against Wilcox County on Saturday. The Lady Dawgs jumped out to a 6-1 lead but in the 4th inning, they began to tire and gave up 10 runs. They would eventually lose in 5 innings but that couldn't tarnish what had already been an incredible showing for the Flea girls. The 3rd place finish in State for these ladies is nothing to sneeze at and we would like to say how proud we are of them. We would also like to congratulate and thank the coaches for their hard work they put in with this crew and commend them on a job well done.

11-12 Boys advance to State with Extra inning effort

Host Trion rolled through the 5th District Class C Tournament undefeated but the way to the state was tough. Not only did Trion have to battle a very tough Haralson County team but the weather proved to be a very disrupted force.

The Dogs faced Tallapoosa in Wednesday’s first contest and Trion very quickly bolted to a big lead with 10 runs in the third inning to take a commanding 12-0 lead. The game made it to the 4th inning and the skies opened and the game was cancelled. Trion’s bats pounded out 10 hits with Dallas Thomas, Reece Crabtree and Jake Well each going 2 for 2. Ty Reynolds, and Gavin Smith combined to pitch a one-hit shutout. Wednesday’s second game between Pickens and Haralson was postponed until Thursday evening.

In the first game Haralson was just two strong for Pickens in a 15-0 whitewash. Pickens managed no hits and just one base runner against the Rebels. Haralson had 10 hits in the 3 inning affair.

With the loss, Pickens then was the opponent for Wednesday night’s loser Tallapoosa. The two teams battled evenly before a big three run homer by Auston Hawkins in the bottom of the 4th proved to be the difference in the 5-3 victory.

Trion and Haralson faced off in the winner bracket finals Friday evening. This game was delayed an hour by heavy rain but with the help of Trion High’s tarps and assistance by the coaches and parents of the Midget Bulldogs, the Trion Rec. ground crew got the field playable. The Dogs scored two in the first and two more in the third to take control of the game. Haralson got a run in the 4th and two in the 5th but Trion answered with 3 in the fourth to cap a 7-3 victory. Adam Jones paced the Dogs at the plate with a 3 for 4 game backed by Gavin Smith’s 3 for 3 effort. Reynolds, Smith, Jones and Treyton Coffman all worked on the mound for Trion.

Haralson took out their frustrations on Pickens in the evenings’ final contest blasting them 19-2. When the last out was made in the run rule shortened 3 inning game, the clock was passed 11:30. Haralson had to sleep quick because they had to return to Trion Saturday morning at 10:30 for the district championship game.

Saturday dawned foggy but eventually by game time, nothing but sunshine splashed the J.W. Greenwood field. Haralson served notice in the first inning that they were awake and alert as they strung together three hits and two walks to post two runs. Trion cut the lead in half when Adam Jones connected for a homerun in the top of the second. After Haralson took a 4-2 lead with two in the third, the Dogs responded with 4 in the 4th to take a 5-4 lead. Haralson wrestled the lead back with two in the bottom of the inning and led 6-5 with Trion facing their final at bat in the 6th inning.

Jones led off the 6th with a basehit and advanced to second on groundout. Coach Larry Reynolds brought Josh Smith off the bench to pinch hit and the youngster came through with a single to right, plating Jones with the tying run. Trion held Haralson in the bottom of the 6th and the game advanced to extra innings.

In the top of the 7th Trion placed Treyton Coffman on second base, using the GRPA international tie breaking rule. Coffman advanced to third on a wild pitch and was still there with one out. Reece Crabtree came up big for the Dogs with a ringing double off the right center fence that easily scored Coffman with the go-ahead run.

Haralson now had their shot at the win and put their runner at second. A wild pitch took a fortuitous bounce back to catcher Crabtree and he pegged the ball to Jones at third who tagged a sliding Rebel for the first out of the inning. Jones’ scoop of the throw and tag was a thing of beauty for all the Bulldog fans. Haralson followed the out with a walk and a single and had the tying runner on third and the winning run on second with one out. A fly ball to center was corralled by Jarrett Pierce and his strong throw to the plate held the runners at their base. The final hope for Haralson hit a routine ground ball to Luke Parker at short and he fired a strike across the diamond to Reynolds at first for the final out of the ball game.

Dallas Thomas was stellar on the mound, relieving Reynolds in the 4th inning. Thomas surrendered only two hits the final 4 frames while striking out 3 and walking only one. Jarrett Gill and Jones each went 2 for 3 to pace the 10 hit attack.

Trion advances to play in the Class C State Tournament July 5-9 in Hazelhurst, Ga.
